It is pretty safe to say that most people have yo-yo exercised. You know what I mean, right? You have some kind of event coming up where you want to be in shape and look good or it is a new year and you want to attempt to create a new body, but after a certain time or the event has passed you go right back into your typical lackadaisical ways. Sometimes you might not even reach your goal and yet you quit working out and exercising to get there because you get frustrated. Then a few months later you might get back into the game and start up a new workout routine again. Now you might think that this is completely harmless for your body, but it might be doing more harm than good. In what ways can yo-yo exercising hurt you? Let’s take a look:

Your heart and lungs cannot become accustomed to a routine and therefore have to work harder to keep up when your re-start.

The natural set point for your body, which is the weight it tries to maintain is proven to be higher when you irregularly exercise.

Emotionally you have to build up your motivation too, and that can be emotionally taxing on you.

So how can you best avoid those setbacks and also keep yourself in a routine to stay fit? Well, it might be more simple than you had originally thought. Try these helpful tips to keep up the routine and stay healthy.

Recreate your goals. Keep a broader goal than simply wanting to lose a set number of pounds. When you say you want to lose 15 pounds, you could lose the weight then jump off the exercise wagon. Maybe you will gain the weight or not, but a lot of people will reach their goal and quit exercising. So keep you goals broader. Think about the benefits of regular exercise: feel better, happier, stronger, healthier, and use those for your goals.

Don’t be boring. Spending all your gym time on a treadmill or bike might be fun for a while, but then it is going to get to be not so fun. You will likely get bored and want to quit. So it’s easy, don’t be boring! Switch up your workouts often to ditch the boredom and keep on going.

Easy does it. You might have a date in mind of when you would like to have all the weight dropped, but that still does not mean you should bust your butt seven days a week initially. Ease into a routine and build upon it from there, otherwise you might get burnt out too quickly.

For some people dozing off into a nice eight hour slumber is super easy. They will sleep through the night with no distractions and nothing causing them to stir. Then there are people like me who have a hard time unwinding and hitting the sack. Waking up to use the bathroom or because of a slight noise is a nightly occurrence and nothing seems to work to get me back to sleep. Recently I realized that I was just trying one tip a night and that if I were doing all that I should, then I would probably get some good rest in each night. I have tried out the below tips and I must say, so far so good.

Ease into your sleep time by slowing dimming and reducing the light in your room. Start an hour or more before you plan on going to sleep. Make sure once the lights are off that your room is completely dark.

Keep it dark in your room. Alarm clocks, televisions, and any device with some kind of light can cause you to stir. Cell phones are other light distractions that can cause issues. If you have light coming in from outside, then consider window treatments that will help block it all out.

Make sure your bedroom stays cool. Your body temperature drops when you are sleeping. If your room is cool it can help ease you into sleep more quickly. It is recommended that the temperature of your bedroom be around or less than 70 degrees.

The quieter your room, the better. Try to keep your room as quiet as possible. Rugs, curtains, and bedding are great ways to buffer out noise, but if they don’t do enough look into earplugs or white noise machines.

The energy of your room should be calm. There should be no distractions like computers or cell phones in the room to drag your attention elsewhere.

If you asked most people why they struggle with losing weight and eating healthy, many would respond by saying that they do not have the proper tools or knowledge to get started. In the past I would recommend that people track everything they eat. On top of keeping track of food, making note of workouts is also important. These daily food journals and workout logs would overwhelm many people though. It was just something else to keep up with. Now there is a new way to keep track of both your food and exercise and find encouragement from others who are looking to lose the weight and keep it off. It is a tool called My Fitness Pal. This is an online food and exercise journal that you can find at myfitnesspal.com. There is also a phone app available that allows you to take it on the go. So how does it work?

Tracking your food has never been so easy. After you set up your goals my answering questions about yourself, My Fitness Pal will let you know your recommend caloric requirements. That will give you a basis of how much you should be eating to lose, gain, or maintain. To enter food you type in what you have eaten in the search bar and for most foods you will find the nutritional information has already been entered for you. Place the food in your category (ie. breakfast, lunch, dinner, snack) and it deducts the calories as well as other important things. Count carbs, protein, cholesterol, and more with this food journal to keep you on track. Keeping up with your workouts is just as simple.

Most workouts are in the exercise database, and you can enter it in to see how many calories you burned. This amount you burned is then added to your goal for calories to ensure you are consuming a healthy amount of food. Tracking your food and workouts is not all you can do though.

My Fitness Pal is also a way to network with other people trying to live a healthier lifestyle. There are forums and blogs that you might find helpful and inspiring. When you are trying to reach a goal it can be easier when you have support whether it is in person or online.

The first time I had an ocular migraine, it terrified me. I didn’t know about them, and began having symptoms rather suddenly. The main symptom of an ocular migraine is a “squiggly lights in your field of vision” experience. You first see a small, enlarging blind spot called a scotoma in your main vision accompanied by bright, flashing or flickering lights known as scintillations. There may also be wavy or zig-zag lines surrounding the blind spot, which is what I have. The blind spot typically grows over a period of 8-10 minutes, until you can’t see something you look at straight on, and your peripheral vision is impaired by the lights.

Although most people do experience pain following this vision disturbing light show, approximately 16% of ocular migraine sufferers do not feel any pain at all. Those who do feel pain, however, suffer immensely. Imagine hearing your adt alarm go off at 20 times the normal volume, and having to feel it pounding through your head for an hour or more. That is a mild attempt to describe the pain.

Here is an informative video on the subject of these migraines that come with a sometimes frightening visual disturbance. It does a good job of showing you what one actually looks like in progress.

My health is very important to me. I like the fact that I make sure that I have the time and give the effort to eating healthy, exercising regularly, and doing other things like yearly physicals to make certain that I am in the best shape that I can be. Recently though I found out that my job is causing me serious harm. Why? Because I sit for the majority of my day in one spot. It is obvious that sitting is not the best for your body or health, especially compared to standing, but who knew that it was creating some serious health risks that I can no longer just ignore? If you are forced to sit stuck in your office chair for hours on end, you might be having some sit-related issues going on too. Find out how sitting is causing you harm, and take a stand.

Body fat increases when you sit. This is not good news for any person, especially not any woman. When you are sitting down your metabolism is not working, and hormones cause your body to store up more body fat. If you’re like me you were probably thinking that your two hour stint at the gym each evening more than makes up for that lack of metabolism. That is not the case. The fact is, sitting is just as important as diet and exercise when it comes to weight loss.

When you sit you are hurting your back. Sitting down puts pressure on your pelvis and your back. And the pressure it creates, your back is not made to handle. To make sure your back is not too stressed, utilize the back of your chair. You should be sitting back with your hips slightly forward.

Studies have shown that sitting down for long periods of time every day can result in an earlier death. A recently published fourteen year study showed that women who sat longer than six hours a day were at risk of dying early by 37%.

All of these facts are startling, right? You can help in trying to avoid these risks by looking into getting a standing desk. If that is not an option, then take frequent standing breaks and move around often.

Running is a healthy way to improve cardiovascular function, increase your stamina, and strengthen your heart and other muscles. When practiced correctly, the risk of injuries due to stress fractures and muscle strains or sprains is very low, and the benefits nearly always outweigh any small risks. Running is also an inexpensive exercise to take part in, requiring only a good pair of well-fitting running shoes and a pedometer to get started.

What do all these running enthusiasts have in common? Several factors, according to some interesting demographic data from the infographic below. The ratio of men to women runners, education levels, and income can be seen here. Since the highest percentage of male and female runners have college degrees, we can also surmise that they would be proactive as homeowners and parents, and interested in home security and living in a safe location.

Everyone has dreams of becoming healthier and maybe even dropping a few pounds, but it is pretty impossible to find the time day in and day out to make it to the gym and get a solid workout accomplished. Some days it is not even possible to get in a full workout no matter what you do. The fact is that you know you will feel better if you get in a workout and your body will be happier and fitter too. So, what I do when I have those crazy days when I cannot make it to the gym and feel like I have absolutely no time to get in a good workout? I workout from home by doing quick full body workouts.

One of the first places I look for exercise options at home is the television. You’d be surprised how many channels available from cable or dish network Houston have early work outs available. I check my TV schedule every week to make a schedule of which shows I want catch for a quick morning work out at home. The workouts that I do are not intended to really get your heart racing, but you will notice that you are using key muscle groups and your core to get in a really great workout.

Another option is YouTube.com I found a couple of videos that show you some moves you can do right in your living room on those days you are not able to workout otherwise. I think you will find these to be beneficial, and if you do these on days that you never worked out before, then you might notice some inches will be lost.

There is nothing that relieves more stress in my opinion than hitting the open road with me a bottle of cold water and my running shoes. I love that when I am out running my mind can be clear and free from all of the thoughts that seem to nag at me and weigh in my mind throughout the entirety of a day. When I am running there is not much that I really think about other than my breathing, so it is a great relaxation method for me. With that said, I have a friend who has the opposite problem that I found out about just last week.

My close friend and I have never ran together. We do not live incredibly close by, so it just did not make sense for either of us to have to drive somewhere to run together. Last week though she happened to be staying with her brother who lives right down the road from me, and we decided taking a run would be fun for us to do. One morning we laced up our shoes and trekked out my door for our run. My friend is quite the talker, and I found out that even while she is running this holds true. I also discovered that instead of relaxing her mind on a run, she has thoughts whizzing past in her brain the whole time. This was not my idea of fun. When we got back to my home, I tried to figure out the deal.

Apparently running is my dear friend’s only time to be alone and think, so she crams in all of her thoughts and worries into a run. Imagine how much better she would be able to run if she would simply free her mind. We talked about this and she agreed. I recommended some incense and herbs that could calm her prior to a run, which you can find at legalherbsdirect.com for your own use. I am a firm believer that there is always a time and a place for everything. While running, that is surely not the time to worry over finances or kids so I also recommended my friend start keeping a journal for all of her thoughts that she used to have while running.

It has only been a few days using my suggestions, and my friend has already shaved some time off her running time. As a runner, you’ve got to love that!

I have quite a few role models when it comes to being a healthy person and exercising regularly. Honestly, I think it is far too difficult for people to keep on working toward a health or fitness goal when they do not have inspiration or role models to look up to. Some of my role models include Lance Armstrong, Rodney Yee, and Serena Williams. I do have one role model that only one of my closest friends knows about, but I guess it’s time to spill the beans…I look up to Richard Simmons. I know it sounds so silly, but the man is impressive, let’s face it. Those silly routines and the help that he has provided so many throughout the years proves that he is a true inspiration.

So why did I just reveal my deep dark role model secret? Well, I found a pretty awesome infographic about Mr. Richard Simmons, and I was just too excited that I wanted to share it with you all. Take a look at it and you’ll will see that this guy has overcome numerous obstacles in his life, and still he remains a positive force. Hopefully, you will see that he is inspirational too.
